Explanation
ChatGPT Work is a way to delegate real work to ChatGPT. Use it when the task has a clear outcome and should end in something you can review and use: a brief, deck, analysis, spreadsheet, project plan, workflow, recurring update, or another completed file.
A useful Work brief answers six questions:
- Outcome: What must exist when the task is complete?
- Sources: Which files, projects, websites, or connected tools may be used?
- Constraints: What must remain unchanged or out of scope?
- Quality: What evidence or checks define a good result?
- Approval: Which consequential actions require your decision?
- Stopping point: When should ChatGPT return a draft instead of proceeding?
Work can use files, plugins, approved tools, browser capabilities, code, and shell commands when they are available. OpenAI describes it as providing the same core capabilities for everyday work through an interface that prefers nontechnical language and finished outputs. Work and Codex overlap, and the same knowledge-work task may be completed in Codex when you want developer views or more technical detail. Exact tools still depend on the account, surface, and environment.
Actions
- Choose one meaningful task that would take several manual steps and end in a reusable result.
- Write the required outcome as a noun plus a quality condition: for example, “a five-option comparison spreadsheet with cited sources and a summary recommendation.”
- List the allowed sources and tools. Separate required sources from optional context.
- Add constraints, such as a date range, audience, output format, excluded sources, or a file that must not be changed.
- Define review criteria. Include checks for factual support, completeness, structure, and usability.
- State when Work must pause, such as before sending a message, changing an external system, or treating a draft as final.
- In the desktop app, choose Work locally when the task needs files, applications, or browser context on the computer. Choose Cloud, when available, when hosted continuity after the app closes matters and the task can use uploaded or connected context.
- Read the brief once as a completion test: could another person decide whether the result is done?

If it fails
- The task keeps expanding. Narrow the outcome, source set, time range, or number of options.
- Work returns an answer instead of a file. Name the file type, structure, and review criteria in the outcome.
- Local files are unavailable in Cloud. Upload them, place them in accessible project context, use an approved connected tool, or switch to local work.
- The task attempts a consequential action. Add an explicit stop-before-action instruction and review the approval request.
